This 1976 view looks straight up Waterloo Place towards Regent Street St James’s, with the equestrian statue of King Edward VII standing on its central pedestal and the grand terraces of Carlton House Terrace framing the scene on both sides. In the distance, the domed frontage of the Royal Opera Arcade Hotel area and the line of red London buses draw the eye towards Piccadilly Circus, while the broad carriageway in the foreground is filled with tightly parked and moving cars that give the photograph a strongly period character. The image captures this ceremonial corner of St James’s before modern traffic reduction and streetscape changes, when Waterloo Place still felt very much like a formal London thoroughfare adapted to the age of the motor car.
