Waterloo station in 1971, with the great Portland stone frontage of the main entrance rising above the retaining wall and roadside shops below. The grand central arch, sculptural groups and bold WATERLOO STATION lettering still dominate the scene, even though the station is partly screened at street level by later road layouts, commercial units and the curving concrete approach in the foreground. Visible shopfronts such as Renovise Dry Cleaning, York Tools Supply, and Sefton’s advertising Castella cigars add useful period detail, while the contrast between the Edwardian station facade and the more modern office block on the right captures the changing face of the South Bank area. It is a strong urban view of Waterloo before later rebuilding around the station approaches altered the look of this part of London.
