Waterloo station in 1972, with the great iron and glass roof of the concourse stretching above a busy crowd of travellers in the British Rail era. At the centre of the scene is the brightly lit W. H. Smith & Son bookstall, with signage for The Daily Telegraph, TV Times, magazines and newspapers, while the departure indicators, Railbar sign, platform letters and hanging advertising panels add further period detail. The mix of coats, suits, hats and long hair captures the station’s everyday early-1970s atmosphere, making this less a formal architectural study than a vivid record of Waterloo as a working London terminus. It is an excellent interior view of the station at a time when bookstalls, overhead signs and the constant movement of passengers gave the concourse its distinctive British Rail character.
