A wonderfully busy 1977 view at the top end of Rupert Street, Soho, looking north towards Brewer Street and the neon-lit frontage of the Raymond Revuebar. The entrance to Walkers Court can be seen beneath the Revuebar sign to the left of the cinema frontage, while the street itself is crowded with shoppers, stallholders and produce barrows in a scene that still has traces of old Soho market life. Among the shop signs are Doc Johnson’s Love Shop, the glowing Revuebar lettering and the Soho Hollywood Restaurant, all helping to date the area to its gaudier late-1970s phase. The fruit stall in the foreground, handcart in the middle of the street and dense mix of pedestrians give the picture a wonderfully chaotic feel, capturing this part of Soho before later redevelopment transformed Walkers Court and much of the surrounding streetscape.
