Looking east from the Monument in 1972, this view follows Lower Thames Street down towards Tower Bridge, which dominates the river in the distance. On the left stands the spire of St Dunstan-in-the-East, the bomb-damaged City church whose ruined body had already become one of the area’s most distinctive survivals, while the long classical riverside building to the right is Custom House on Lower Thames Street. The broad street running towards the river is lined with post-war offices, temporary gaps and redevelopment sites, and several cranes can be seen on the skyline, underlining how much of this eastern side of the City was still being rebuilt in the early 1970s. The scene has a notably industrial feel for such a central location, with working river traffic, smoke drifting up on the far bank and the Pool of London still closely tied to the commercial life of the docks downstream.
