View from the Monument, London in 1972. Looking south across the Thames, with Bankside Power Station dominating the left of the scene, its chimney billowing smoke — a reminder of why buildings such as Cannon Street Station were so heavily blackened by soot at the time. The station’s glass roof had been removed at the start of the Second World War for safekeeping, only for the Luftwaffe to destroy the storage site. In the foreground is Cannon Street Station, then notoriously redeveloped in the 1960s when an office block was constructed directly above it. The scheme later became synonymous with the Poulson Affair, in which architect John Poulson was convicted and jailed after it emerged that the project had been enabled through widespread bribery, leaving the station permanently altered and widely criticised.
