This 1970s photograph looks along Cromwell Road past the great bulk of the Victoria and Albert Museum, with its red-brick and stone frontage partly screened by mature roadside trees and the museum’s dome rising above. A red Routemaster bus is stopped outside beside a white BMC EA van, while a black cab and other traffic move along a road that feels noticeably quieter than today’s South Kensington. The bus stop, broad pavements and scattered pedestrians give the scene an everyday, unhurried character, showing the museum not as a tourist icon but as part of the normal life of west London. More than just a view of the V&A, the image captures Cromwell Road in the 1970s before later traffic growth and streetscape changes altered the look of this stretch outside one of London’s great museums
