This 1976 photograph shows the Victoria Palace Theatre on Victoria Street with its grand white stone façade, domed corner turret and large illuminated billboard advertising a show starring Cilla Black and Jimmy Tarbuck. To the left is the Duke of York pub with its Watney’s frontage with “Beers Wines & Spirits” painted above, while a cyclist in a bright red jacket blurs through the foreground and a blue saloon waits by the theatre entrance. Behind the Victorian theatre rises a sheer modern office block, giving the scene a strong contrast between ornate Edwardian showmanship and the harder commercial redevelopment of 1970s Victoria. More than just a theatre view, the image captures this part of London at a moment when old pub frontages, variety entertainment and modern office towers all coexisted on the same busy street.
