This 1976 street scene shows the corner of York Street and Thornton Place in Marylebone, with the sign for Thornton Place W1 fixed to the dark brick wall and the Merryfield House Hotel occupying the corner property below. The hotel entrance, with its hanging sign, window boxes, iron railings and twin lamps, sits within a run of Georgian and nineteenth-century terraces, while parked cars and yellow kerb lines add the everyday detail of inner London in the mid-1970s. Rising behind the terrace on the left is the distinctive domed corner of York House, giving the view an added landmark feature. It is a good record of a quieter, more residential side of central London, where small hotels, boarding houses and older terrace buildings still defined much of the streetscape before later refurbishment and change.
