This 1974 view shows the F. W. Woolworth & Co. Ltd. branch at 128–133 Cheapside, its restrained cream-and-gold fascia set below a much older and more elaborate upper façade of darkened stone, bay windows and dormered roofline. The entrance still has the familiar multiple-door arrangement and branded glazing of a central London Woolworths, while the display windows carry small household and toy items typical of the chain’s broad everyday appeal. Above, the building retains a strongly late-Victorian character, giving the scene the layered look so often found on Cheapside, where older commercial architecture continued to house twentieth-century high-street names. It is a good record of a vanished piece of everyday shopping London, when Woolworths was still a fixture of the City’s main retail streets.
