This 1989 view of Electric Lane captures a lively stretch of Brixton street life, with the bold Don’t Panic frontage dominating the left-hand side beneath the Electric Lane SW9 street sign. Just beyond is the entrance to Brixton’s Market Row, with its fading painted sign still spanning the archway, while a One Stop shop and other small premises continue along the street. The scene is full of everyday detail, from shoppers carrying bags and pushing prams to the black bollards, narrow carriageway and worn market buildings that gave this part of Brixton its distinctive character. It is a strong late-1980s record of Electric Lane before later refurbishment, when the area still had a rougher, more improvised look shaped by market trade, local shops and constant foot traffic.
