This 1985 view looks straight into the restored Covent Garden Market, with the blue-painted ironwork and glazed roof of the old market hall framing the scene. The large banner reading GLC Covent Garden Market – 5 fruitful years places the photograph firmly in the early years of the piazza’s rebirth after the wholesale fruit and vegetable market moved away, while below it traders, barrows and stacked wooden displays show the space still being used in a more informal, market-like way than today. The hanging lamps, arcaded sides and open stone forecourt all add to the sense of Covent Garden in transition, part heritage restoration, part working retail and performance space. It is a strong record of the area while the Greater London Council’s transformation of the old market buildings was still a relatively recent achievement and the new identity of Covent Garden was still taking shape.
