This 1985 view shows Covent Garden after its transformation from fruit and vegetable market to visitor destination, with the restored iron-and-glass market hall framed by colonnades and hanging lamps. The large banner reading Covent Garden Market – A GLC achievement places the scene firmly in the period of its redevelopment under the Greater London Council, while a smaller sign further inside marking 5 fruitful years underlines how recently the new chapter of the piazza had begun. In front of the hall, outdoor café seating with parasols has already become part of the setting, and pedestrians crossing the cobbles give the scene an everyday, lived-in feel rather than a formal postcard view. It is a good record of Covent Garden in its early revived phase, when the old market buildings were being reintroduced to Londoners and tourists as a place for shopping, eating and strolling rather than wholesale trade.
