This 1985 night view shows the Trocadero on Coventry Street dressed in Christmas lights, with long strands of bulbs draped across the grand façade and wrapped around the street trees outside. On the left, two bright neon signs for the HMV shop glow in pink and blue at street level, adding a very mid-1980s splash of colour beneath the more traditional festive lighting above. The building’s columns, upper cornice and entrance canopy are all picked out by the illuminations, while the dark street and silhouetted figures below make the display stand out even more strongly. It is a vivid record of West End Christmas lighting in the mid-1980s, capturing Coventry Street at night when entertainment venues, record shops and seasonal decorations combined to give the area its unmistakable festive atmosphere.
