This December 1985 view looks east along Oxford Street from Great Portland Street, with the West End dressed in Christmas lights and the moving traffic reduced to red and white streaks across the road. Large illuminated stars hang from the lamp columns, while the trees and shopfronts are traced with festive lights, creating a distinctly mid-1980s Oxford Street night scene. Visible businesses include C&A on the left, and on the right Littlewoods, Wallis and Ratners. It is a strong record of Oxford Street before later retail churn and changing Christmas displays, when the famous shopping street still had a very different line-up of chain stores and a more understated but unmistakably festive seasonal look.
