This 1989 view captures Alice’s on Portobello Road, its vivid red frontage standing out among the market bustle with the painted claim Suppliers of Junk & Works of Art Since 1887 above the doorway. Outside, the display spills into the street with enamel signs, framed pictures, china, furniture and assorted bric-a-brac, while shoppers browse and pass by in front of the open entrance. The scene has all the crowded, slightly theatrical character of Portobello at its best, where antiques dealing, street trade and casual browsing merged into one continuous spectacle. It is a strong late-1980s record of one of the road’s best-known dealers, whose deliberately eclectic presentation helped make this stretch of the market feel as much about personality and display as about the objects for sale.
