This 1989 view shows Break for the Border on Argyll Street, immediately next door to the London Palladium, its boldly theatrical frontage making it stand out among the West End buildings around it. The entrance is framed by brightly painted border decoration, a carved hanging sign for Break for the Border Café London, neon beer signs and two large figures set on plinths outside the doorway, giving the place the sort of eye-catching themed presentation that suited late-1980s central London nightlife. A chalkboard in the entrance advertises the bar and lunch trade, while the words Tacos and Sol can be seen painted inside, reinforcing the venue’s Mexican-inspired identity. It is a strong period image of Argyll Street at the end of the 1980s, when themed restaurants and bars like this had become a notable part of the West End scene alongside long-established theatres and music venues.
