This 1982 view looks east along Chandos Place with the street sealed off during a fire at the Civil Service building. A red Shelvoke fire engine stands in the middle distance with smoke drifting across the road, while police tape and a portable no-entry barrier have been set up across the carriageway to hold back pedestrians and traffic. The Civil Service sign is clearly visible on the building at centre right, and the scene is full of everyday central London detail, from suited office workers and a lone passer-by carrying a briefcase to the dark wood shopfronts, parked car and directional sign pointing towards Covent Garden, the London Transport Museum and the Market. It is an unusually dramatic street record of this part of the West End, catching Chandos Place not in its normal weekday flow but in a brief moment of disruption, with smoke, emergency response and curious onlookers interrupting the usual office-day routine.
