This 1980 photograph captures a London promotional float for Disney’s The Black Hole, loaded with large model robots and spacecraft-inspired figures drawn from the film’s futuristic design. The advertising panel on the left reads Now Showing at the Odeon, St Martin’s Lane in 70mm and selected theatres across London, while the main display board on the right carries the film title and poster artwork. The float has a distinctly theatrical, slightly homemade feel, with oversized character props mounted on the back of a yellow vehicle and a small crowd pausing to look on beneath the bare winter trees. It is a good record of the sort of elaborate film promotion still used in central London at the turn of the 1980s, when major releases were often launched with eye-catching street displays as well as cinema advertising. The film itself premiered in London in December 1979 and was promoted in 70mm roadshow-style presentation, which fits the wording visible on the display here.
