This 1984 view shows the National Gallery facing directly onto moving traffic at Trafalgar Square, with the broad roadway in front still open to buses, vans, black cabs and everyday London traffic. A blue Cityrama sightseeing bus and a white London Crusader tour bus pass the great classical façade, while a uniformed police officer, pedestrians and the line of stone bollards in the foreground add to the busy street-level feel of the scene. The contrast with today is striking, as the stretch of road in front of the gallery has since been pedestrianised, making this a useful record of Trafalgar Square before one of its most significant modern changes. It captures the National Gallery not as an isolated monument but as part of the noisy, traffic-filled London streetscape of the mid-1980s.
