This 7 June 1984 view captures the miners’ protest on Fleet Street at a point when the street was filled not with ordinary traffic but with marchers and brass band musicians. Several bandsmen carrying large tubas dominate the foreground, while protesters walk alongside them beneath the reflective frontage of the Daily Express and Sunday Express building on the left. The mixture of police, banners, instruments and demonstrators gives the photograph a strong sense of movement and noise, recording Fleet Street as a stage for one of the defining industrial disputes of the decade. More than just a street scene, it preserves the atmosphere of protest London in 1984, when central streets regularly became the setting for highly visible political demonstrations.
