King’s Cross station in 1985, with commuters and travellers gathered beneath the bold British Rail forecourt canopy while the great Gothic clock tower of the Midland Grand Hotel at neighbouring St Pancras rises behind. The scene is full of mid-1980s London detail, from the wet paving and umbrellas to the mix of suits, briefcases and casual clothes, all set against the strong corporate styling of the dark blue King’s Cross sign with its red supports. What makes the photograph especially striking is the contrast between modern British Rail branding in the foreground and the richly detailed Victorian architecture beyond. It is a vivid street-level view of King’s Cross before the huge redevelopment of later decades, when the station frontage and forecourt still had a much more open and functional appearance.
