This 1982 photograph captures a large illuminated Hoverspeed advertisement at Waterloo Station, using bold blue and red lettering and a stylised hovercraft racing across the Channel to sell the idea of fast cross-Channel travel. The wording promises Dover to Calais or Boulogne in 40 minutes and the slogan Streamlining the channel, neatly summing up the futuristic, speed-driven image that hovercraft services projected in the late twentieth century. As a piece of period station advertising it works especially well, reflecting a time when British Rail termini still carried eye-catching poster panels for ferries, hovercraft and continental travel, and when hovercraft were marketed as one of the quickest and most modern ways to reach France from Britain.
