This 1989 view shows the grand terracotta frontage of the Hotel Russell dominating the east side of Russell Square, its richly ornamented elevations, balconies, arches and rooftop turrets still giving it one of the most distinctive silhouettes in Bloomsbury. The hotel’s entrance canopy with the HR monogram is visible at street level, while a pair of Clarke’s London coaches waits outside, suggesting the steady stream of visitors and tour traffic the hotel attracted in this period. In the foreground, part of the Russell Square garden layout survives in view, including the small fountain basin and railings, while a blue Ford Sierra and passing pedestrians add useful everyday detail. It is a strong late-1980s record of the building before its later rebranding as the Kimpton Fitzroy London, when it was still firmly known by generations of Londoners and visitors as the Hotel Russell.
