This 1987 view shows the Palm House at Kew Gardens deep into its major second restoration, with the famous Victorian glasshouse stripped back to its exposed iron ribs and surrounded by dense scaffolding. The scene is far more industrial than botanical, giving a rare look at one of Britain’s best-known glasshouses reduced to its structural skeleton. Rather than a simple repair job, this was part of the large restoration campaign carried out between 1984 and 1988, during which the Grade I listed building was dismantled, restored and rebuilt. The work was extensive enough that the Palm House was effectively taken apart and reconstructed, making images like this an especially valuable record of a short-lived moment in the building’s history.
