This 1986 view shows PS Tattershall Castle moored on the Thames beside Victoria Embankment, seen from beneath the heavy iron and concrete structure of Hungerford Bridge. The bridge dominates the top half of the picture, with pedestrians visible along its red-painted walkway, while below it the old paddle steamer sits dressed with bunting and showing her distinctive funnel and paddle housing. Behind the vessel, the trees of the Embankment soften the scene and help contrast the pleasure-boat character of Tattershall Castle with the hard engineering of the bridge and river piers. It is a strong composition of old and new Thames London, combining Victorian river infrastructure, a surviving excursion steamer and the everyday movement of people overhead in one neatly layered riverside scene.
