This 1980 view shows the paddle steamer Princess Elizabeth moored on the Thames just west of London Bridge, her black hull, red funnel and side paddle box standing out against the hard-edged commercial buildings of the City riverfront. Lettering on the vessel advertises her use as a restaurant, reflecting the afterlife of many older steamers once their working careers had ended. Behind her is a distinctly late twentieth-century riverside scene of office blocks, elevated roadways and utilitarian embankment structures, a sharp contrast with the vessel’s much earlier appearance and character. The image works particularly well as a record of the Thames in transition, when historic craft like Princess Elizabeth could still be found moored against a backdrop of post-war redevelopment and heavy riverside traffic.
