This 1989 view shows the Prince Alfred on Queensway, a handsome corner pub with a dark-painted frontage, hanging baskets and tall windows dressed with deep red curtains. The Queensway W2 street sign fixes the location clearly, while the neighbouring PizzaLand frontage and the passing pedestrians, pushchair and roadside traffic give the scene a very everyday late-1980s Bayswater feel. The pub’s projecting sign and decorated exterior help it stand out from the surrounding terrace, making it one of those traditional London corner houses that still anchored busy shopping streets even as the businesses around them changed. The Prince Alfred was an older Bayswater house dating back to the early 1850s and, although refurbished since, it still survives on Queensway today, making this a useful record of its appearance before later alterations to the frontage and surrounding streetscape.
