This 1989 view shows Powers of Kilburn at 340 Kilburn High Road, its frontage almost hidden behind a dense display of second-hand furniture stacked out onto the pavement. The painted sign above advertises the business as specialists in second hand furniture, while the handwritten-style panels on either side offer to buy anything of value for cash and mention wanted antiques and modern furniture. Outside, the goods range from chests of drawers and cabinets to dining chairs, a rocking chair and assorted smaller household pieces, giving the shop the crowded, slightly improvised look typical of many London second-hand dealers of the period. It is a strong everyday record of Kilburn High Road in the late 1980s, when independent furniture and salvage shops like this still formed a visible part of the street’s character.
