London Pavilion rebuild, Piccadilly Circus, London, 1987. This view across the junction captures the London Pavilion deep in reconstruction, its great curved frontage hidden behind scaffolding and grey sheeting. A large site banner reads “London Pavilion” and “Retailing at the heart of London”, with Edward Erdman named as agent, while boards at street level for Trollope & Colls and the nearby Trocadero underline the scale of change taking place around Piccadilly Circus in the late 1980s. In the foreground are black-painted traffic lights, pedestrians in period casualwear, a pale saloon crossing the circus, and the edge of the rebuilt advertising corner on the far left, making this a strong record of the site while one of the West End’s best-known buildings was still hidden behind its temporary skin.
