Piccadilly Circus, London, 1987. This busy late-1980s view looks across the circus with the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and the figure popularly known as Eros standing in front of the scaffold-wrapped London Pavilion, then deep into its rebuild. A large site banner on the sheeting reads “London Pavilion” and “Retailing at the heart of London”, with agents Edward Erdman and Anthony & Spencer named below, while a Bovis board can be seen at street level. On the left, the rebuilt advertising corner is dominated by bright signs for Kodak and Sanyo, and in front of them passes a blue open-top Cityrama sightseeing bus. The yellow estate car, roadworks, lamp standards and crowds all help to capture Piccadilly Circus during one of its major late-20th-century transformations.
