This 1984 view of Parliament Square captures an everyday Westminster street scene rather than a ceremonial one, with a policewoman talking to a passer-by in the foreground while another officer stands watch by the crossing. Across the road are a row of Bridge Street businesses including Westminster Auto Centre, a Lambert & Butler cigarette advert, Samuel Maynard, and St Stephen’s Tavern, whose bright sign sits above the ground-floor restaurant frontage. The crowds, traffic lights, guard rails and steady flow of pedestrians give the whole image a distinctly workaday feel, showing this corner of Westminster as a busy thoroughfare as much as a political landmark. Whitehall can be seen extending to the north. It is a strong record of Parliament Square in the mid-1980s, when the area still had a more open, less heavily controlled street layout than it does today.
