Piccadilly Circus, London, 1983. This damp street-level view looks across the circus towards the Piccadilly Circus station entrance and the run of West End frontages beyond. Clear signs include Dunn & Co., Snobs, the roundel for Piccadilly Circus Station, the Cockney Pride Tavern, and Henekey’s Steak Bar, while farther left can be seen Sophie’s Choice on the cinema frontage and a bright poster for Jeremiah’s Arches. Westminster’s distinctive bronze-painted lamp columns, traffic lights and railings line the wet pavements, with green litter bins, bus lane signs, pigeons on the forecourt and a scattering of parked and passing cars all helping to capture an everyday Piccadilly Circus scene in the early 1980s.
