This 1980 photograph shows Odin’s Raven displayed in the forecourt of the British Museum, with the longship’s curved clinker-built hull and prow set against the museum buildings behind. Loaned by the Government and People of the Isle of Man, the vessel had been built in Norway as a two-thirds scale replica of the famous Viking Gokstad ship and sailed from Trondheim to Peel in 1979 to mark the Manx Millennium. The setting gives the image an unusual contrast, placing a reconstructed Viking ship within the formal neoclassical surroundings of Bloomsbury, with later twentieth-century London buildings rising beyond. It is a striking record of a short-lived London appearance by one of the best-known modern Viking ship replicas associated with the Isle of Man.
