This 1987 view from the NatWest Tower looks west across the City of London, with St Paul’s Cathedral dominating the centre of the scene above a tightly packed spread of offices, rooftops and surviving church towers. To the left, the River Thames curves away upstream, with one of the central London bridges crossing towards the South Bank, while far beyond on the right skyline the BT Tower rises above the haze as a clear period landmark. The foreground is full of the late-twentieth-century commercial City, with flat-roofed office blocks and service buildings crowding around older churches, including the prominent tower of St Bride’s lower left of St Paul’s and other smaller Wren-era spires still punctuating the roofscape. It is a strong record of the Square Mile before the later wave of glass towers, preserving a London skyline in which St Paul’s still towered over a lower, denser and far more uniform commercial city.
