This 1980s photograph shows The Cake House in St James’s Park, one of London’s more unusual post-war park refreshment buildings, with its angular concrete roof, glazed walls and blue awnings crowded with visitors on a sunny day. Opened in 1970, the pavilion’s striking modern design stood in sharp contrast to the surrounding lawns, flower beds and mature trees, giving this part of the park a distinctly late twentieth-century look. The outdoor tables, bright planting and steady flow of people capture it in everyday use as a popular stopping point for park visitors. Demolished in 1998, The Cake House is now a vanished piece of modern London park architecture, making this a particularly useful record of a short-lived but memorable feature of St James’s Park.
