This 1986 view looks into St Saviour’s Dock at Bermondsey, where old wharf buildings, timber river walls and decaying dock structures still dominate the inlet despite clear signs of change already under way. On the left, one of the former warehouse buildings has been converted with balconies and riverside frontage, while a crane still survives beside it as a reminder of the dock’s working past. Across the right-hand side, the heavier industrial buildings and projecting wharf remain far rougher and more derelict, with boarded openings, stained brickwork and weathered piles showing the area before its later, more complete redevelopment. It is a strong record of Docklands in transition, capturing St Saviour’s Dock at a moment when residential conversion, industrial decline and the surviving fabric of the old Thames-side wharves could still all be seen together in one view.
