This 1980s view looks across the Thames towards St Paul’s Cathedral, its great dome dominating the skyline above a patchwork of older City buildings, post-war offices and a cleared riverside foreground. In front of the cathedral stands the dark tower of St Benet Paul’s Wharf, one of the most distinctive surviving riverside churches in the area, while the broad empty strip below marks the site that would later be filled by the City of London School. The contrast between Wren’s cathedral, the smaller historic church and the exposed, undeveloped riverfront makes this a particularly valuable record of a short-lived moment in the changing Thames skyline. Today the foreground is far more built up, so the photograph preserves an open view of St Paul’s that soon disappeared.
