This 1986 view shows Southwark Bridge spanning the Thames against a backdrop of late twentieth-century riverside offices and commercial buildings on the north bank. The bridge’s green and gold ironwork and granite piers still provide the main visual anchor, while behind it stands a now-vanished stretch of waterfront architecture that was swept away not long after this photograph was taken. At low tide the exposed foreshore and timber river walling are still visible beneath the buildings, giving the scene a harder, more functional character than the rebuilt riverside that followed. It is a valuable record of a lost section of the City’s Thames frontage just before redevelopment transformed the view around Southwark Bridge.
