This 1986 photograph shows two very different vessels moored together on the Thames beside the Tower of London: the large white yacht Welsh Falcon behind and the much smaller Greenpeace boat Beluga alongside. The name Welsh Falcon is visible on the larger vessel’s superstructure, while GREENPEACE and BELUGA can both be read clearly on the smaller craft, whose hull also carries a bold rainbow-style stripe. Behind them are the trees and riverside walls of the Tower precinct, placing the scene on the stretch of the north bank just east of Tower Bridge. The juxtaposition of a luxury private yacht with a campaigning environmental vessel makes this an especially interesting Thames scene, and it also preserves Welsh Falcon during the years after her renaming from Marandis and before her loss by fire in 1989.
