This 1980 photograph looks south along Whitehall from Trafalgar Square, capturing a busy stream of evening traffic dominated by red Routemaster buses and black cabs. The central bus is working route 159 to West Hampstead, with its side blind also listing key points on the route including St John’s Wood, Oxford Circus, Marble Arch and Victoria Station. Its side advert reads “Try a big bite”, while the passing Routemaster on the left carries the slogan “Enter A Different World”. Above the traffic, a large board on the building frontage reads “OFFICES TO LET”, and the varied architecture of Whitehall and the lower end of Northumberland Avenue gives the scene a distinctly central-London backdrop. The combination of crowded top decks, glowing interior lights, old-style taxis and painted route blinds makes this a strong record of Whitehall before the Routemaster disappeared from most ordinary service work.
