This 1987 photograph shows Westminster Pier busy with river traffic, passengers and staff moving between the blue-painted pier buildings and a line of excursion boats moored along the Thames. One of the larger vessels alongside appears to be Viscount, with its name partly visible on the bow, while further boats are berthed upstream beneath the dark iron span of Hungerford Bridge. On the left, the riverside promenade runs past the pier entrance sign for Westminster Pier, while in the foreground the green-domed river light and stone stairway add more period dockside character. The scene is a strong record of the Thames as a working passenger waterway in the late 1980s, before later rebuilding and rebranding altered many of the piers, boats and riverside facilities along this stretch of central London.
