This 1982 view from Tower Bridge looks across the Tower of London towards a changing City skyline of post-war office blocks, newer towers and construction cranes. In the foreground are the Tower’s stone walls, turrets, rooftops and trees, while beyond them the City rises in layers of older masonry buildings, flat-roofed commercial blocks and tall modern office towers. Several bright orange cranes stand among the newer developments, underlining how much of the Square Mile was still being rebuilt at the time. The contrast between the medieval fortress in the foreground and the hard-edged commercial skyline behind makes this a particularly strong record of London in the early 1980s, when the Tower still sat against a backdrop of expanding high-rise office development rather than the glass-heavy skyline that would follow later.
