This 1985 evening photograph shows Westminster Bridge and Big Ben at dusk, with the illuminated clock faces glowing above the Thames under a blue-purple London sky. The tower is partly wrapped in scaffolding around its upper stages, a useful period detail that fixes the scene during one of the recurring maintenance campaigns on the Palace of Westminster. To the left, the Gothic frontage of the Houses of Parliament stretches towards the bridge, while on the right the riverside buildings of Victoria Embankment and several moored vessels add more life to the waterfront. The lamps along Westminster Bridge and the lit boats below give the image a strong twilight atmosphere, making it a particularly attractive record of central London before the riverside skyline changed and long before the tower’s later formal renaming as the Elizabeth Tower.
