Piccadilly Circus, London, 1990. This lively Christmas view shows the rebuilt advertising corner in its bright early-1990s form, dominated by huge illuminated panels for Panasonic, Coca-Cola, Foster’s, Kodak, Sanyo, McDonald’s and Burger King. In front of the signs stands the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, with the figure popularly known as Eros partly enclosed by a festive dome of lights, while a temporary Christmas display for the Evening Standard carries Garfield panels and the slogan “Working for a Brighter, Greener and Cleaner City”. The green litter bins, black railings, busy pedestrians and winter decorations give the scene a very recognisable end-of-year West End atmosphere at the start of the 1990s.
