This 1973 photograph looks across one of Oban’s working harbour yards, where cattle are being handled in timber pens beside a row of low pier buildings and parked commercial vehicles. Visible signs for the British Railways Pier Office and Mac Fisheries place the scene firmly within the town’s mixed transport and fishing economy, while the clock tower, church spire and waterfront buildings beyond anchor it in central Oban.
The picture captures a side of the port that sat alongside the town’s better-known passenger trade. Oban’s modern growth was transformed by the arrival of the railway in 1880, and by the 20th century the town had become both an important ferry port and a regional transport centre for the west coast. That broader role helps explain a scene like this, where livestock handling, fish-related businesses and rail-linked pier activity all appear together in one busy working corner of the harbour.
