Rothesay Harbour and Esplanade Hotel, Rothesay, 1990. This harbourfront view looks across the waterfront at Rothesay with the Esplanade Hotel standing out on the right, its name painted high above the street-facing frontage. Behind the seafront buildings rises the tall church spire and a dense hillside of traditional Bute houses, giving the scene a distinctly west coast character. In the foreground are timber harbour structures, railings, benches and a row of dark and red portable cabins or site units, while at street level a handful of shopfronts and signs can be picked out beside the hotel. The contrast between the working harbour foreground, the hotel frontage and the tightly packed terraces climbing the hill makes this a very characteristic Rothesay townscape from the end of the twentieth century.
