Looking south from Queen’s Drive in Holyrood Park across Duddingston Low Road to the University of Edinburgh’s Pollock Halls of Residence in 1977, with the complex of modern student blocks spread out beneath the wider city skyline. The large white building behind is the Royal Commonwealth Pool, completed for the 1970 British Commonwealth Games, while the Pollock site itself had been expanded in the 1960s with a programme of new halls and later took in athletes during those same Games. Set against the long ridge of the Pentlands in the distance, the view captures a very 1970s Edinburgh mix of open parkland, new university development and major modern civic architecture.
