North Castle Street, Edinburgh 1950s

This 1950s street scene on North Castle Street captures a handsome line of parked cars against the stone frontages and flower boxes of central Edinburgh. From right to left, the light-coloured van is an Austin A35, introduced in 1956, followed by what appears to be a Lanchester Fourteen Roadrider De Luxe of the late 1930s. Next comes an Austin Ten, most likely one of the Cambridge-bodied post-war examples, with an Austin A70 Hereford on the far left. The shopfront of Graham Limited, described as slaters and glaziers, and the traditional railings and steps add to the strong sense of everyday post-war city life.

The car line-up is especially striking because it spans several different eras of British motoring at once: a pre-war luxury saloon, a long-running Austin Ten design from the 1930s and 1940s, the more modern A70 Hereford of the early 1950s, and the compact Austin A35 van which only arrived in the second half of that decade. That mixture makes the photograph feel very transitional, with older pre-war vehicles still in regular use alongside newer post-war traffic. The identifications fit the visible shapes well, though I would still treat the middle two cars with a little more caution than the Austin A35 van and Austin A70 Hereford.
