The City Chambers from the Court of Session, Edinburgh, in the 1970s, looking across Parliament Square towards the ashlar front of the former Royal Exchange, by then long established as the City Chambers. The Mercat Cross stands in the middle of the square, while period traffic includes a light blue Vauxhall Viva police car, a red saloon and other parked vehicles that place the scene firmly in the later 20th century. Designed by John Adam and opened in 1760 as the Royal Exchange before becoming the home of the Town Council in the early 19th century, the City Chambers form one of the defining civic façades of Edinburgh’s Old Town, and this view captures them as part of the everyday working city rather than a purely ceremonial setting.
